Why LinkedIn Matters More Than Most Job Boards

While job boards like Indeed and Glassdoor are useful, LinkedIn is where the majority of professional recruiting actually happens. Recruiters actively search LinkedIn every day for passive and active candidates. If your profile isn't optimized, you're invisible to a huge portion of the hiring market.

1. Optimize Your Profile for Search

LinkedIn uses a search algorithm. Your profile needs to contain the right keywords for recruiters to find you. Here's what to focus on:

  • Headline: Don't just list your job title. Use it to describe your value, e.g., "Digital Marketing Manager | SEO & Paid Media | B2B SaaS"
  • About section: Write 3–5 sentences in first person describing what you do, what you're looking for, and what makes you effective
  • Experience section: Use bullet points with outcome-oriented language, not just job duties
  • Skills section: Add at least 10 relevant skills — these are searchable keywords

2. Turn On "Open to Work"

LinkedIn's "Open to Work" feature signals recruiters that you're available. You can set it to be visible only to recruiters (not your current employer) or publicly. Be specific about the job titles you're open to, your preferred location, and whether you're open to remote roles.

3. Post and Engage — Don't Just Lurk

Profiles that engage with content consistently rank higher and appear in more searches. You don't need to post every day, but aim for at least 2–3 meaningful actions per week:

  1. Comment thoughtfully on posts in your industry
  2. Share an article with a brief take of your own
  3. Post a short lesson learned or professional insight
  4. Congratulate connections on new roles or milestones

This activity keeps you visible and builds recognition with people in your target field.

4. Connect Strategically, Not Randomly

Quality outweighs quantity. Connect with:

  • Recruiters at companies you want to work for
  • People in roles you're targeting (to learn about the field)
  • Alumni from your school who work in your target industry
  • Speakers and authors in your field

Always include a short, personalized note when sending a connection request. Even one sentence helps dramatically improve acceptance rates.

5. Apply Through LinkedIn — But Follow Up

Easy Apply is convenient, but it means everyone else is applying just as easily. After submitting through LinkedIn, find the hiring manager or recruiter for the role and send them a brief, direct message expressing your interest. This extra step sets you apart from the crowd.

6. Use LinkedIn's Company Pages

Follow companies you're interested in. Their pages post job openings, company news, and employee spotlights. Engaging with their content before applying shows genuine interest — something recruiters notice.
